Interior Materials – What are the Differences?

Choosing the right material for your interiors can be challenging given the many options available. Below is a guide comparing different materials commonly used for furniture and interior finishes to help you make informed decisions.

1. COMPOSITION

MFC ◈ Composed of wood chips, adhesives, and additives, with a melamine layer on the surface for added durability.
MDF ◈ Primarily softwood fibers compressed with medium density; sometimes includes hardwood depending on available sources.
Moisture-Resistant MDF ◈ Similar to MDF but with a green core to indicate higher moisture resistance and a higher density (700-780 kg/m³).
HDF ◈ Made of wood powder and additives for added hardness, pressed under high density (800-950 kg/m³).
PVC Panels ◈ Made of PVC powder and sometimes includes cellulose or inorganic fillers for added strength.
ECOPLAST Panels ◈ Made from PVC powder, stone powder, and additional additives.

2. DURABILITY

MFC ◈ Last 7-10 years with its melamine coating in ideal conditions.
MDF ◈ Up to 10 years in dry environments; melamine or acrylic coatings can extend this to around 15 years.
Moisture-Resistant MDF ◈ Longer lifespan than standard MDF.
HDF ◈ Exceptionally durable, with a natural longevity even without a surface coating.
PVC Panels ◈ Durable for 15 years without needing additional coatings.
ECOPLAST Panels ◈ Boasts a 15-20 year lifespan, making it one of the most durable options.

3. MOISTURE/WATER RESISTANCE

MFC ◈ Low moisture resistance; exposure to water can cause swelling if the melamine layer is compromised.
MDF ◈ Standard moisture resistance, with additional coating providing better protection.
Moisture-Resistant MDF ◈ Good moisture resistance.
HDF ◈ Excellent moisture resistance.
PVC Panels ◈ Completely waterproof.
ECOPLAST Panels ◈ Fully waterproof, ideal for high-moisture environments.

4. COST

MFC ◈ Most affordable option.
MDF ◈ Slightly more expensive than MFC.
Moisture-Resistant MDF ◈ Higher cost than standard MDF.
HDF ◈ The most expensive among engineered woods.
PVC Panels ◈ Higher cost than HDF.
ECOPLAST Panels ◈ Costs about two-thirds the price of standard PVC panels, offering great value.

5. APPLICATIONS

MFC ◈ Lightweight furniture and office interiors like desks and file cabinets; wardrobes in low-humidity areas.
MDF ◈ Suitable for most interior applications, excluding areas with high moisture like kitchens and bathrooms.
Moisture-Resistant MDF ◈ Widely used in high-moisture areas like kitchens and bathrooms.
HDF ◈ Ideal for high-traffic spaces such as hotels, theaters, and government offices

◈ Suitable for high-moisture areas like lower kitchen cabinets and bathroom storage.

PVC Panels ◈ Used for kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities, wall cladding, and even commercial spaces like schools, hospitals, and ships.
ECOPLAST Panels ◈ A versatile alternative to engineered wood, suitable for all types of interior applications due to its complete water resistance.
